TUSTIN WINE AND SPIRITS
Get to know bourbon.
A short introduction to choosing an American whiskey.
Start with the label
Compare the producer, expression, bottle volume and alcohol content. A product’s proof is twice its alcohol-by-volume percentage in the United States. A higher proof describes alcohol strength, not quality.
What makes it bourbon?
US bourbon is produced in the United States from a fermented mash containing at least 51% corn and stored in charred new oak containers, subject to federal production standards. The label and producer’s own description are the best starting point for the exact bottle.
Single barrel and small batch
Single barrel identifies whiskey drawn from an individual barrel, which can vary in character from another barrel. Small batch is a producer’s description; it does not specify one universal number of barrels.
Choose thoughtfully
Ask about flavor descriptions, proof, bottle size and current availability. Start with the style you already enjoy and compare the producer’s notes. Drink responsibly and never purchase for anyone under 21.
